AP Art History
← Back to AP PreparationCourse scope
AP Art History teaches students to examine artworks from different periods and cultures in terms of form, content, function and historical context. Students interpret, compare and connect works to artistic traditions based on visual details.
Exam and assessment structure
The fully digital exam on 12 May 2027 lasts 3 hours. The 80 multiple-choice and 6 free-response questions contribute equally to the total score. The free-response section includes two long and four short analysis essays, assessing comparison, visual and contextual analysis, attribution, and continuity and change. The course treats art history as a field of interpretation rather than memorising names and periods.

In this course we start preparation by assessing the student’s prior knowledge and needs. We carry out topic work together with the relevant question and assessment types, and develop the student’s ability to apply knowledge and justify answers. We track progress with practice suited to the course structure and regular review, and update the study plan for the target exam session.
