AP Chemistry
← Back to AP PreparationCourse scope
AP Chemistry examines the properties of atoms and molecules, chemical bonding, reactions and energy changes at an introductory university level. Kinetics, equilibrium, acid–base chemistry, thermodynamics and electrochemistry are core topics. Besides doing calculations, students interpret experimental results and explain chemical phenomena at the particle level.
Exam and assessment structure
The exam on 6 May 2027 lasts 3 hours 15 minutes and consists of 60 multiple-choice questions and 7 free-response questions (3 long and 4 short). The two sections carry equal weight. In the hybrid digital exam, free-response answers are written on paper; approved calculators may be used in both sections.
