← Back to AP PreparationCourse scope
AP Physics 1: Algebra-Based studies motion, force, energy, momentum, rotational motion, oscillations and fluids with an algebra-based approach. The course, which does not require calculus, focuses on explaining physical phenomena with mathematical models, graphs and experiments.
Exam and assessment structure
The exam on 5 May 2027 lasts 3 hours and consists of 42 multiple-choice and 4 free-response questions, with the sections weighted equally. The free-response questions assess calculation, moving between representations, experimental design, and qualitative–quantitative reasoning. In the hybrid digital format, free-response solutions are written on paper; approved calculators may be used.
