Course scope

IB Design Technology teaches students to identify a need or problem and produce a solution through research, design development, prototyping, testing and evaluation.

Exam and assessment structure

The structure first assessed in 2027 combines design knowledge with hands-on production. At both SL and HL, Paper 1 consists of multiple-choice questions and Paper 2 of short and extended responses. The individual design project lets the student apply the design process and makes up 40% of the total grade at SL and 30% at HL. Scope and expectations widen at HL. A successful project shows the reasoning behind decisions and how well the solution meets the user’s need, as well as the product itself.

Preparation at Youprep Studio

In this subject we work according to the student’s SL or HL level, exam year and the program followed at school. We close topic gaps and work on using knowledge in the relevant assessment formats and justifying answers. We set study priorities with the school’s exam and submission calendar in mind, and organise review and practice around the student’s progress.
