IB Environmental Systems and Societies SL ve HL

← Back to IB Preparation

Course scope

IB Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) examines the interaction between environmental systems and societies by combining the sciences and social sciences. Sustainability, systems and different perspectives form the basis of the subject; the current program is offered at SL and HL.

Exam and assessment structure

Paper 1 is based on analysing data in a previously unseen case study; Paper 2 on short answers, data interpretation and structured essays. The individual investigation report is worth 25% at SL and 20% at HL. At HL, topics are deepened through frameworks such as environmental law, economics and ethics. The subject helps students evaluate environmental problems not only by their scientific causes but also by social choices and their consequences.

Preparation at Youprep Studio

In this subject we work according to the student’s SL or HL level, exam year and the program followed at school. We close topic gaps and work on using knowledge in the relevant assessment formats and justifying answers. We set study priorities with the school’s exam and submission calendar in mind, and organise review and practice around the student’s progress.

Current exam information

May and November sessions; exact days and times are confirmed with the school’s IB coordinator.
