Extended Essay (EE)

← Back to IB Preparation

Course scope

The Extended Essay (EE) is an IB Diploma Programme core component in which the student carries out independent research on a topic of their choice and produces an academic piece of up to 4,000 words. It develops the skills of framing a research question, using reliable sources, choosing an appropriate method and turning findings into a coherent argument.

Exam and assessment structure

Assessment is not based on a single exam session but on the work produced during the research process. The student progresses under the guidance of their supervisor at school and completes the submission stages according to the school calendar. The aim of preparation support is to help the student plan and develop their own research, keeping the academic ownership of the work with the student.

Preparation at Youprep Studio

In this subject we work according to the student’s SL or HL level, exam year and the program followed at school. We close topic gaps and work on using knowledge in the relevant assessment formats and justifying answers. We set study priorities with the school’s exam and submission calendar in mind, and organise review and practice around the student’s progress.

Current exam information

May and November sessions; exact days and times are confirmed with the school’s IB coordinator.
