IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches SL

← Back to IB Preparation

Course scope

IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches SL aims to build an analytical understanding of mathematical relationships and the ability to explain solutions with coherent reasoning. Algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus are the core areas.

Exam and assessment structure

In the 2027 assessment there is a calculator-free Paper 1 and a Paper 2 in which a calculator may be used; each lasts 90 minutes and is worth 40%. The remaining 20% comes from the exploration, a piece of work on a mathematical topic chosen by the student. This structure combines exam problem-solving with independent mathematical inquiry.

Preparation at Youprep Studio

In this subject we work according to the student’s SL or HL level, exam year and the program followed at school. We close topic gaps and work on using knowledge in the relevant assessment formats and justifying answers. We set study priorities with the school’s exam and submission calendar in mind, and organise review and practice around the student’s progress.

Current exam information

May and November sessions; exact days and times are confirmed with the school’s IB coordinator.
