IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL

← Back to IB Preparation

Course scope

IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL addresses real-life problems at a more advanced level through mathematical modelling, statistical thinking and technology. Students interpret complex data, build models and evaluate the validity of their results.

Exam and assessment structure

In the 2027 assessment, the two-hour Paper 1 and Paper 2 are each worth 30%, and the one-hour extended problem-solving Paper 3 is worth 20%; technology may be used in all three. The remaining 20% comes from the mathematical exploration. Given the scope of HL, this subject should not be seen as relying only on calculator use; it requires strong conceptual understanding and interpretation.

Preparation at Youprep Studio

In this subject we work according to the student’s SL or HL level, exam year and the program followed at school. We close topic gaps and work on using knowledge in the relevant assessment formats and justifying answers. We set study priorities with the school’s exam and submission calendar in mind, and organise review and practice around the student’s progress.

Current exam information

May and November sessions; exact days and times are confirmed with the school’s IB coordinator.
