Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

← Back to IB Preparation

Course scope

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) questions how we construct knowledge and how we justify what we believe we know. Students evaluate the role of evidence, interpretation and perspective across different areas of knowledge.

Exam and assessment structure

One of the compulsory core components of the IB Diploma Programme, TOK is assessed through an exhibition and a 1,600-word essay rather than a written final exam. The exhibition connects knowledge questions to concrete examples, while the essay requires developing a more extended discussion. Preparation focuses on defining concepts clearly, choosing suitable examples and weighing alternative perspectives rather than repeating ready-made views.

Preparation at Youprep Studio

In this subject we work according to the student’s SL or HL level, exam year and the program followed at school. We close topic gaps and work on using knowledge in the relevant assessment formats and justifying answers. We set study priorities with the school’s exam and submission calendar in mind, and organise review and practice around the student’s progress.

Current exam information

May and November sessions; exact days and times are confirmed with the school’s IB coordinator.
